Are Gummy Vitamins as Healthy as Pills? Experts Reveal the Truth

Gummy vitamins have quickly become a popular alternative to conventional supplements, offering a sweeter and more convenient way to take daily nutrients without swallowing pills.

But do they work just as well?

Some studies suggest that certain vitamins may be absorbed as efficiently—or even more efficiently—in gummy form than in tablets.

That convenience, however, can come with drawbacks that are easy to miss when browsing the supplement aisle.

From lower mineral content to nutrients that may deteriorate during storage, experts explain whether gummy vitamins are a worthwhile choice compared with traditional supplements.

Are gummy vitamins absorbed as effectively as pills?

The amount of a vitamin the body absorbs plays a major role in determining how much benefit it can provide.

When it comes to gummies, the scientific evidence is not entirely consistent.

A 2019 study in the journal Nutrients followed 31 healthy adults and found that vitamin D3 was absorbed significantly more effectively from gummies than from tablets.

Still, the research involved a single 20,000-IU dose—far more than most people take in a typical daily supplement—and assessed short-term absorption rather than lasting health outcomes.

Dr Jordan Glenn, head of science at SuppCo, a supplement information and testing platform, cautions against applying those findings to all gummy vitamins.

‘The 2019 paper showed a striking difference in D3, with the gummy producing approximately twice the blood level seen with the tablet,’ he told Our News Outlet. He noted, however, that the study was small and received funding from a gummy vitamin manufacturer.

Other studies have reported more modest results.

A 2021 study found that gummy and tablet multivitamins produced similar short-term vitamin B12 absorption, although the products contained different quantities of the nutrient. That research was also funded by a manufacturer.

Glenn says many vitamins may be absorbed comparably in gummy and traditional supplement forms, but the outcome depends on the specific nutrient, dosage and product formula.

Dr Kristyen Tomcik, an assistant professor of nutrition at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, also points out that higher absorption does not automatically translate into improved health.

‘It isn’t a simple one-to-one relationship between what goes in and what the body gains,’ he told Our News Outlet.

Extra absorption may be useful for someone with a deficiency, but it is unlikely to offer additional advantages to a person who already receives enough of that vitamin.

Which nutrients may be missing from gummy vitamins?

Gummy vitamins can vary in terms of how many nutrients they deliver, and it's common to have to take multiple at a time

The nutrient content of gummy vitamins can vary widely, and some products require several gummies per serving

Absorption is only one part of the equation. The amount of each nutrient in the product matters as well.

Compared with traditional tablets, some gummy multivitamins contain smaller amounts of minerals—especially iron, calcium and magnesium.

Glenn explains that ‘you need hundreds of milligrams to provide a meaningful dose, while a gummy is largely made up of sugar and gelling agents, leaving limited space for other ingredients.’

Iron is particularly difficult to include because of its metallic flavor, while other bitter ingredients can also make a gummy less appealing. That said, mineral-free formulas are not universal.

‘One of the most common errors is assuming every multivitamin delivers the same nutrients in identical amounts,’ registered dietitian Bonnie Taub-Dix told Our News Outlet.

‘The word “multivitamin” on the label does not guarantee that it contains every nutrient you may need.’

Tomcik says people with diagnosed deficiencies may require a targeted supplement recommended by a doctor, rather than relying on a general multivitamin to meet their needs.

Why heat and moisture can affect gummies

The way gummy vitamins are formulated and stored also sets them apart from many tablets and capsules.

Because gummies generally contain water, sweeteners and gelatin or pectin, keeping their nutrients stable over time can be more difficult. Their quality may decline as the product ages.

‘Gummies are typically less stable than tablets or capsules because they contain more moisture and respond more strongly to heat,’ Glenn said. ‘As a result, nutrients such as vitamin C, folate and B12 may degrade more quickly during the shelf life.’

Probiotic gummies face an additional concern, since heat and moisture can reduce the number of live microorganisms that remain viable.

To offset possible losses, manufacturers may add extra nutrients during production, a process known as an overage. Glenn says this is intended to help the product retain the labeled nutrient levels toward the end of its shelf life.

Even so, the actual potency can be influenced by storage conditions and the point at which the product is tested.

Consumers cannot judge a gummy’s vitamin strength by appearance alone, making manufacturing standards and storage conditions important. Follow the label’s instructions and keep supplements away from excessive heat and humidity.

Gummy vitamins may contain added sugar

While not all gummy vitamins contain sugar, they may also have additives that cause digestive distress.

Not every gummy vitamin contains sugar, but some include ingredients that may trigger digestive discomfort

The sweet, candy-like flavor that makes gummy vitamins appealing often comes from added sugar.

‘I wouldn’t worry about one or two grams of added sugar in a vitamin, but I would consider how quickly those amounts accumulate if you’re taking several supplements each day,’ Taub-Dix said.

Sugar-free products are not automatically a better choice. Some rely on sugar alcohols, which can lead to bloating, gas or diarrhea, particularly when consumed in larger quantities.

Their resemblance to candy also creates a risk of accidental overuse, especially for children. Experts recommend keeping gummy vitamins securely out of children’s reach.

Are gummy supplements as safe as traditional pills?

In the United States, gummy vitamins and conventional supplements are generally classified as dietary supplements.

Unlike medicines, they are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for safety and effectiveness before reaching the market, so product quality matters regardless of whether a supplement comes as a gummy, pill or capsule.

Taub-Dix advises shoppers to examine the serving size, nutrient quantities and other ingredients listed on the label.

‘Many people assume that one gummy equals one serving, but some products require two, three or even more gummies to deliver the amounts shown on the label,’ she told Our News Outlet. She also recommends reviewing the Percent Daily Value for each nutrient rather than assuming that larger numbers are always beneficial.

Third-party certifications, including USP Verified and NSF, can provide additional reassurance that a supplement meets particular quality standards.

Should you take gummy vitamins or pills?

Experts believe gummy vitamins may help more Americans get enough nutrients, but take cost and serving into consideration

Experts say gummy vitamins may help more people meet their nutrient needs, but serving size and cost should also be considered

Gummy vitamins can be a practical option for people who have difficulty swallowing pills or are more likely to take a sweet, chewable supplement consistently.

‘We often concentrate on a supplement’s ingredients, but it is just as important to ask whether someone will actually use it regularly,’ Taub-Dix said. ‘A vitamin left untouched in a medicine cabinet cannot provide any benefit.’

On the other hand, people who need precise amounts of iron, calcium, magnesium or another nutrient may find tablets, capsules, liquids or specialized supplements more suitable.

Glenn also recommends comparing the price per serving, since a product that requires several gummies may cost more than it initially appears.

‘Don’t choose a gummy solely because it tastes good,’ Taub-Dix said. ‘It must also contain the nutrients you’re actually seeking.’

The bottom line

For some nutrients, gummy vitamins may be absorbed as effectively as traditional pills. However, they can provide lower quantities of key minerals, including calcium, magnesium and iron.

The right supplement is one that delivers the nutrients you need in appropriate amounts, comes from a product that meets quality standards and fits naturally into your daily routine.

As Taub-Dix explains: ‘Read the label, understand what you’re taking and remember that even the most enjoyable vitamin cannot replace a balanced diet.’
