European 1,500m Champion and Two-Time Olympian Dies

Ciara Mageean, the European 1500m champion and two-time Olympian, has died at the age of 34 after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.

The Northern Irish athlete, who competed for Ireland at two Olympic Games and won European gold in 2024, died on Sunday morning surrounded by her family and friends.

Mageean, who was from Portaferry in County Down, was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in May 2025.

Her death came only weeks after she married her long-term partner, Thomas Moran, in a private civil ceremony in Belfast last month.

The news was confirmed in a deeply emotional statement published on her social media accounts on Sunday.

It said: ‘At 6.30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones.

‘A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam (may her soul rest in peace).’

Tributes quickly followed for the celebrated middle-distance athlete, whose career was shaped by remarkable achievements, repeated injuries and an unwavering determination to succeed.

Athletics Ireland said: ‘We are heartbroken. An inspiration to so many, Ciara will be remembered for her courage, kindness and incredible spirit.

‘Our deepest sympathies are with her family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Ciara.’

Mageean reached the summit of her career at the European Athletics Championships in Rome in June 2024, producing a dramatic victory in the women’s 1500m final to secure the first major senior title of her career.

Initially boxed in behind Britain’s Georgia Bell and Jemma Reekie, she eventually found space and powered down the finishing straight to win gold in 4:04.66.

The triumph ended a series of near-misses on the international stage and confirmed her status as one of Europe’s leading middle-distance runners.

Afterwards, an elated Mageean said that ‘words can’t even come close’ to expressing what the victory meant to her.

Her hopes of following that success with an Olympic medal were shattered weeks later, however, when an Achilles injury forced her to withdraw from the Paris Games just before her opening heat.

It was the latest setback in a career repeatedly interrupted by serious injuries.

Mageean first represented Ireland at the 2016 Rio Olympics, reaching the 1500m semi-finals. At the postponed Tokyo Games in 2021, a calf injury disrupted her preparations and she was eliminated in the heats.

Her athletic ability was clear from an early age. She initially played camogie for Portaferry GAC before focusing on athletics in pursuit of her Olympic dream.

She enjoyed an outstanding junior career, winning 1500m silver at the 2010 World Junior Championships and the 2011 European Junior Championships.

At 18, she also reached the 1500m final at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

A serious ankle injury then ruled her out of the London 2012 Olympics and led to surgery in 2013.

She returned to win the Irish 1500m title in 2014, followed by European bronze in Amsterdam two years later.

In 2017, Mageean relocated from Dublin to Manchester to join Steve Vernon’s Team New Balance after ending her coaching partnership with Jerry Kiernan.

Her progress continued, with European Indoor bronze in 2019 followed by a string of record-breaking displays.

At the 2020 Diamond League meeting in Monaco, she broke Sonia O’Sullivan’s Irish 1,000m record, which had stood for 27 years.

Two years later, coached by former British Olympian Helen Clitheroe, Mageean won silver at both the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, finishing behind Britain’s Laura Muir on each occasion.

She later beat Muir and a world-class field at the Brussels Diamond League, setting a new Irish 1500m record of 3:56.63.

Mageean finished fourth at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, narrowly missing a medal, but went on to break the Irish mile record and win the BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year award.

Her long-awaited European title in Rome the following summer became the defining achievement of a career built on exceptional resilience.

After her cancer diagnosis, Mageean spoke openly about her gratitude for the life she had lived and the opportunities her athletics career had brought her.

Earlier this year, she said she was ‘continuing to find the joy in everyday’ while thanking supporters for their messages.

In an interview with the BBC in June, she said she was ‘grateful’ to have enjoyed a career ‘that many others didn’t get to have’.

Speaking candidly to The Irish Times that same month, Mageean discussed her terminal diagnosis and her fears about leaving her partner behind.

She said doctors had told her she could have only two or three years to live and admitted she was afraid she would not see her 40th birthday.

Despite the devastating prognosis, she remained focused on making the most of her time. She published a memoir, My Greatest Race, and continued with plans for her wedding.

Only days before her death, Mageean and her husband celebrated with relatives and friends at Darver Castle in County Louth, following their civil ceremony in Belfast.

The celebrations provided a final joyful chapter in the life of an athlete whose courage and achievements inspired people across Ireland and far beyond.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said he was deeply saddened by Mageean’s death.

‘My heartfelt sympathies go to her husband Thomas, all her family and friends,’ he wrote in a statement on the social media platform X.

Tánaiste Simon Harris also described the news as heartbreaking.

He wrote on X: ‘She was a European champion, two-time Olympian, a proud Irish athlete and an extraordinary person.’

Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill said Mageean had shown ‘extraordinary talent, determination and dedication’.

‘From representing Ireland at two Olympic Games to winning European Championship gold in Rome in 2024, Ciara demonstrated extraordinary talent, determination and dedication,’ she said.

‘Beyond the medals, records and sporting honours, however, Ciara will be remembered for her warmth, courage and tremendous strength of character.

‘Throughout her illness, she displayed a remarkable spirit and an extraordinary ability to find hope and joy, even in the most difficult circumstances. Her courage touched countless people and will leave a lasting legacy.

‘For a community like Portaferry, this loss will be deeply felt. Ciara was one of our own, and the pride she brought to her community and beyond will never be forgotten.’
