Harry Styles complains about NYC coffee prices: 'It is a cappuccino. It can't be $10'

Harry Styles recently wrapped a 30-show residency at New York’s Madison Square Garden, but the city’s coffee prices may have left the biggest impression. During a concert near the end of the run, the singer joked that the cost of a cappuccino was among Halloween’s scariest sights.

“It is a cappuccino. It can’t be $10, it can’t be,” Styles said, according to videos shared by fans on social media.

“The scariest thing about this Halloween is the price of caffeinated beverages in this city. Astronomical. It’s out of control,” he added, before turning his attention to the cost of tipping.

Some fans found it amusing that one of the world’s wealthiest and most successful entertainers was grumbling about the everyday expense of a cup of coffee.

“Harry is right … $10 for a cappuccino plus at least a 20% tip?” one fan wrote. “Are you for real?”

Other fans, however, used the moment to criticize the high price of tickets for Styles’ concerts.

Coffee prices have been hit by several economic shocks in recent years, including climate-related production shortfalls in major coffee-growing countries and US tariffs that were later removed.

The average price of a pound of ground roast coffee in US cities reached $9.33 in September, according to the latest inflation data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That marked the highest September price on record and represented a 91% increase from 2020, adding coffee to the broader cost-of-living debate as the US heads toward the midterm elections.

Coffee companies say they absorbed part of the increase by reducing profit margins during the cost shock, helping limit even steeper price rises. They are now working to rebuild those margins.
