'Return my father's ashes': Thieves took cancer patient's remains from daughter's home and nothing else in targeted break-in, cops say

A peculiar home burglary in Colorado has local police delving into a case that defies typical theft motives. In an incident that occurred at the residence of Geraldine Sierra on Brothers Lane in Pueblo, the only item taken was an urn containing her late father’s ashes.

Pueblo, Colorado, urn burglary

Cops in Pueblo, Colorado, are investigating a burglary where the thieves only stole an urn (KRDO).

The break-in, which took place shortly before 4 p.m. on January 21, immediately drew attention due to its specific and targeted nature. Despite the presence of other valuables, the burglars seemed to have one objective in mind. Geraldine Sierra noticed two unknown men inside her home through security cameras and promptly contacted authorities. However, the suspects managed to escape before the police arrived at the scene.

Investigating officers discovered that the intruders had a precise plan. They exited their vehicle, headed straight for the house, and gained entry via a back door. This pointed to the likelihood that the burglars were familiar with the home’s layout and knew exactly what they were after. Once inside, they bypassed electronics and other valuables, making their way directly to Sierra’s bedroom where the urn was kept.

Sierra expressed her distress over the loss to local media, sharing with KRDO, an ABC affiliate, the personal significance of the stolen item. Her father, Patrick, had succumbed to cancer last year, and his ashes held immense sentimental value.

The woman returned home to find electronics untouched, but one item missing: her father’s urn.

Sierra told local ABC affiliate KRDO that her father Patrick died last year after a battle with cancer.

“He was like my best friend. Someone that I talked to every single day up until he passed away. You know, he was my hero. He was my everything, honestly. When he passed away, everything just stopped,” she said in an interview with the TV station.

Sierra had a simple message for the thieves:

“Return my father’s ashes,” she stated.

A spokeswoman for Pueblo police said detectives continue to investigate the case and are following up on leads.

“I just wish somebody would bring him back home,” Sierra stated.

Anyone with information should call Pueblo police.
