Millions of Brits ignore most common early sign of dementia – do you?

There are certain signs that might be overlooked but could indicate the early stages of dementia. According to the Alzheimer’s Society, there are six prevalent symptoms associated with dementia. Alarmingly, more than half of the adults in the UK are unaware of some of the key symptoms.

One such symptom is memory loss, like having trouble recalling recent events. Another sign is difficulty in organizing thoughts, such as having trouble making decisions. You might also encounter issues with language or communication. Additionally, some individuals with dementia face vision problems, like trouble judging distances. Confusion regarding time or place serves as the fifth common symptom.

The sixth and final symptom is experiencing changes in mood or personality, for example feeling anxious or withdrawn.

Alzheimer’s Society says: “Around one million people are living with dementia in the UK and a third do not have a diagnosis.

“Yet, our research indicates that over 60% of UK adults are unaware that vision issues can sometimes indicate dementia—and one in ten adults couldn’t name a single common symptom of dementia.”

If you’re worried you may have dementia, you should seek medical advice.

NHS says it’s normal for your memory to be affected by stress, tiredness, certain illnesses and medicines.

They advise that if you notice increasing forgetfulness, especially if you are over 65, it’s wise to consult a GP about the early symptoms of dementia.

They further mention: “While occasional memory lapses can be irritating, if it starts affecting your daily activities, or is causing concern for you or someone you know, it’s important to seek assistance from a GP.

“Dementia involves more than just memory loss. It can influence how you express yourself, your thought process, emotions, and behavior. It’s also crucial to understand that dementia is not a normal part of aging.”
