Hallelujah Anyway, Anyway: A Film By Jeff And Neil
In March of last year, Jeff Hiller released a short film titled Hallelujah Anyway, Anyway, which he created in collaboration with Neil Goldberg. The film features footage that Jeff shot in the early 1990s of shopkeepers near his apartment in the East Village throwing open their gates in the morning. Neil paired this footage with video of a neighbor waving a white handkerchief from their window during quarantine.
In the film, Neil explains that waving a white flag can mean surrender, but he saw it as a gesture of gratitude and a way of saying “I’m here.” The film reflects on the perpetual change and resilience that mark life in New York City, a theme that is especially relevant in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since 2019, Neil has hosted a podcast called She’s a Talker, in which he uses index cards to delve into conversations with his favorite New Yorkers. He has interviewed a diverse range of guests, including hip-hop artist Cakes da Killa, fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, Golden Globe winner Kathleen Turner, and Jeff Hiller himself.
The podcast’s name comes from an experience Neil had in the early ’90s when he was combing his roommate’s cat and found himself saying the words “She’s a talker.” He wondered how many other gay men in NYC might be doing the same thing at that moment, and he set out to videotape gay men all over the city in their living rooms, combing their cats and saying, “She’s a talker.” The podcast reflects a similar spirit of NYC-centric curiosity and absurdity.
