Anthony Albanese and Donald Trump

Far more Australians think Donald Trump’s second term as US president is bad news than those who think it’s positive, but they aren’t ready to call for a rethink of the relationship with our most important ally.
Ahead of Trump’s meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese next week, the Sydney-based United States Studies Centre has released new polling, providing a snapshot of how the US and its president are viewed on this side of the Pacific.

A recent survey involving over 1,000 participants has shown that only 16% of Australians view Donald Trump’s second term as beneficial or very beneficial for Australia. In stark contrast, 56% believe it has been detrimental or very detrimental.

This survey was published just before Prime Minister Albanese’s scheduled visit to Washington, where he is set to engage in a formal bilateral meeting with Trump.

During this summit, discussions may cover a range of topics including the AUKUS alliance, Australia’s defense budget, tariffs, and security issues in the Indo-Pacific. However, the subject of critical minerals is also anticipated to be a significant point of conversation between the two leaders.

“Australia has a wealth of critical minerals to offer the global market,” stated Treasurer Jim Chalmers during an address in Washington this morning.

“American businesses are in urgent need of these resources, and Australia is exceptionally well-positioned to fulfill that demand,” he added.

“There’s little doubt that this will feature in the talks between Prime Minister Albanese and President Trump next week,” Chalmers concluded.
