Clay Travis’ $10M WNBA Challenge Raises Net Worth Questions

Clay Travis has built much of his media profile on arguments that provoke debate, and this week he put an eye-catching price tag on his latest one.

On Monday, Travis issued a challenge to the reigning WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces: face a boys’ high school state championship team selected by him in a pay-per-view exhibition, with profits going to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The incentive, he said, would be a $10 million prize paid by him to the winning side.

If the high school boys win, I will give them ten million dollars. If the WNBA team wins, I will give them ten million dollars.”

The offer stems from the broader political fight over transgender athletes in women’s sports. Travis renewed the idea after Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who plays alongside WNBA star Caitlin Clark, said publicly that women’s sports should be limited to biological females. Travis argued that if male-female athletic differences are not meaningful enough to require separate competition, then the WNBA champions should have no issue proving that point against a top boys’ high school team.

The proposal also invites a practical follow-up: Is Clay Travis actually rich enough to make good on a $10 million promise???

The $10 Million Offer Is Larger Than The Aces’ Entire Payroll

The size of the offer stands out even more when compared with WNBA payroll figures. Under the league’s new collective bargaining agreement, the 2026 salary cap rises to $7 million, up from $1.5 million the year before. The league expects the average salary to reach $583,000, with top players eligible to make as much as $1.4 million.

For the Aces, that $1.4 million supermax belongs to three-time league MVP A’ja Wilson. Travis’ proposed payout would be more than seven times Wilson’s annual WNBA salary.

Las Vegas currently has about $6.99 million committed in salary across its 12-player roster. Put another way, Travis is offering nearly $3 million more for a single exhibition game than the defending champions are set to pay their entire team for a full season. Split evenly among the 12 Aces players, a $10 million prize would come out to roughly $833,000 apiece.

How Clay Travis Made His Fortune

Travis began his professional life as an attorney before transitioning into sports writing and broadcasting. In 2011, he founded OutKick, originally known as OutKick the Coverage, as an independent sports and commentary website.

Over the following decade, Travis expanded the company into podcasts, radio, video, political commentary, and sports betting referrals. By 2021, OutKick had become one of FanDuel’s significant sources of new wagering customers. Fox Corporation acquired the business in June of that year.

Fox did not publicly disclose what it paid. However, Front Office Sports reported in October 2025 that the total transaction was worth $100 million. The publication also reported that Travis was scheduled to receive the final payment connected to the sale in 2025. When Semafor asked Travis directly about the rumored $100 million price, he replied:

“That’s not a crazy rumor.”

OutKick was jointly owned by Travis and Savage Ventures, and neither party disclosed its exact ownership percentage. The reported price may also have included deferred payments, employment agreements, performance incentives, or other consideration spread across several years. Travis would then have owed substantial taxes on whatever portion he received.

Did Fox’s SEC Filing Prove OutKick Sold For Much Less?

For several years, skeptics argued that the OutKick sale could not have been worth anywhere near $100 million because Fox described the acquisition as “not material” in its SEC filings.

A March 2024 investigation published by the Substack “Exposing Clay Travis” used that language to suggest Fox probably paid something closer to $10 million. The article then estimated Travis’ net worth at approximately $25–$30 million.

There is a problem with that interpretation.

Fox’s filing did not say the OutKick purchase price was immaterial. It said the incremental revenue and EBITDA associated with its fiscal 2021 acquisition and other transactions were not material to Fox’s consolidated financial results. Fox is an enormous corporation generating billions of dollars in annual revenue. Even a $100 million purchase could be relatively insignificant to the company’s overall operations.

Clay Travis’ Own Wealth Claims

Travis has not been shy about discussing his finances. He has repeatedly referred to himself as a “hundred millionaire” and has occasionally suggested he is worth several hundred million dollars.

During a March 2024 broadcast, Travis reportedly described his assets as including:

  • $25 million in stocks
  • $40–$50 million worth of homes in Tennessee and Florida
  • Interests in nine or ten buildings
  • Investments in several private equity funds
  • Approximately $200,000 in his checking account

The 2024 Substack investigation questioned those numbers. Its investigation identified a Tennessee residence worth roughly $3 million, a Florida condominium assessed at approximately $1.8 million, and additional properties in Tennessee and Florida that were either undeveloped or under construction and carried significant loans. The authors could not verify Travis’ claimed stakes in commercial buildings or private equity funds.

The investigation raised legitimate questions about Travis’ claim that his homes alone were worth $40–$50 million. But it did not provide a complete accounting of his finances. Stocks, private fund investments, minority interests held through LLCs, and other assets are not necessarily visible in ordinary property and corporate records. The authors also had no way to determine exactly how much Travis received from the OutKick sale or how much he was earning through his Fox and radio contracts.

So while the available evidence does not support Travis’ loftiest claims of being worth several hundred million dollars, it also does not prove that the assets identified by the Substack represent the entirety of his fortune.

His Income Did Not End With The OutKick Sale

Travis continued working for OutKick and Fox for five years after the acquisition. He also co-hosts “The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show,” a nationally syndicated political radio program carried by more than 550 stations. His arrangements with Fox, OutKick, and iHeartMedia’s Premiere Networks are multimillion-dollar deals. In June 2026, Travis left his management role at OutKick but signed a new Fox News Media contributor agreement. He also continued hosting “OutKick the Show with Clay Travis” on FS1.

So, is Clay Travis Rich Enough To Pay $10 Million?

CelebrityNetWorth currently (and perhaps somewhat conservatively) pegs Clay Tavis’ net worth at $50 million.

So, is he actually rich enough to pay the $10 million prize?

Probably, yes.

But make no mistake: $10 million would be an enormous amount of money for Travis. It represents 20% of our estimate of his entire net worth. Losing it would not bankrupt him, but it would take a very noticeable bite out of his fortune.

Here is what I think is actually going on:

Clay does not believe there is any realistic possibility that a WNBA team will accept the challenge. No team has agreed to play, no high school opponent has been selected, and there is no public indication that Travis has placed $10 million in escrow or signed a binding agreement. For now, the promise costs him nothing while generating national publicity.

And in the extremely unlikely event that a WNBA team did accept, the resulting spectacle would attract an extraordinary amount of attention. The game could generate massive television, streaming, sponsorship, and pay-per-view interest—even if Travis followed through on his promise to donate the profits to charity.

Would that publicity be worth risking $10 million?

That is debatable. But for now, Clay Travis has managed to receive the publicity without spending a dime.
