In July 2020, Patrick Mahomes agreed to a then-unprecedented contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs, a 10-year pact that eventually carried a value of $450 million. At that point, he had already captured an MVP award and guided Kansas City to a Super Bowl championship, giving the franchise every reason to invest heavily in its star quarterback.
Mahomes has only strengthened his importance to the organization since signing that deal. He has added another MVP trophy to his résumé, while the Chiefs have made four more Super Bowl appearances and won two of them.
With three championships, five trips to the Super Bowl, and two MVP honors, the partnership has delivered exactly what both sides hoped for. Now, Kansas City is doubling down again. According to Mahomes’s agency, Equity Sports, the Chiefs have adjusted his contract by adding two more years, pushing the total value to $504.75 million. That makes it the first NFL contract to surpass the $500 million mark.

The restructured agreement keeps Mahomes tied to the Chiefs through the 2033 season. No other NFL quarterback is currently signed beyond six seasons, and Mahomes’ total contract value stands well ahead of the next closest deal. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen ranks second at $330 million.
Chiefs chairman and co-CEO Clark Hunt praised Mahomes in a statement following the announcement. Hunt described him as “one of the most iconic, beloved sports figures of all time” and said, “Patrick is a generational talent and an elite human being, and I’m so excited he will continue to lead our team into the future.”
The extension comes after a difficult season for Kansas City, which failed to reach the playoffs. Mahomes missed the closing stretch of the year after suffering tears to both his ACL and LCL, then undergoing surgery in mid-December. He is expected to recover fully, although he is taking a cautious approach to his comeback.
The Chiefs don’t seem to have any intention to rush him to rush back, either. After all, he’s now financially the most valuable investment in the NFL.
