Smith was born in southern New Jersey. Her family later relocated to upstate New York before moving to Dayton, Ohio, where she has spent most of her life.
Following college, Smith worked as a 911 dispatcher for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department while considering a career in law enforcement. Her professional interests ultimately shifted toward the legal system, leading her to work first as a legal secretary, then as an in-court assistant and criminal and family law paralegal.
