Sherry E. Cardoso, a prominent figure in New York’s culinary scene, currently serves as the executive chef and partner at Cynthia, an upscale dining establishment located in the West Village. She is also showcasing her culinary talents as a contestant on the 23rd season of Bravo’s “Top Chef.”
Although originally born in New York, Chef Cardoso spent much of her formative years in Minas Gerais, Brazil. She was raised by her mother, with her aunt frequently stepping in to help during her mother’s absences. Her passion for cooking was kindled during weekend visits to her uncle’s farm, where she explored the fields and experimented in the kitchen.
At the age of 14, Cardoso returned to the United States to live with her older sister. She pursued her culinary education at a community college in New Jersey, skillfully balancing her studies with the responsibilities of motherhood. Her first professional role in a kitchen was at the prestigious Le Cirque, where she honed her French culinary techniques under the guidance of Chef Christophe Bellanca.
Cardoso’s career continued to flourish as she took on the role of sous chef under the acclaimed Chef Michael Psilakis at the Michelin-starred Greek restaurant, Anthos. She then spent four years refining her skills at Per Se with Chef Thomas Keller, before advancing to Executive Sous Chef at Brooklyn Fare. Her first executive chef position was at Café Cluny in the West Village of New York.
In her career trajectory, Cardoso joined forces with Chef Greg Baxtrom as the Culinary Director for Baxtrom Hospitality Group. Over three years, she played a pivotal role in launching three major New York dining venues. She eventually took the helm as Executive Chef at Metropolis by Marcus. Now, as Chef and Partner at Cynthia, she is preparing for the restaurant’s grand opening in March.
