Ray Walters Biography – Ray Walters Wiki
Ray Walters is a British pen-restoration specialist and the founder of RAW, a business creating a distinctive collection of fountain pens. He previously ran Vintage And Modern Pens and is also known to viewers as an expert on BBC One’s The Repair Shop.
Born in Jamaica, Ray spent his early years living with his grandmother before moving to England to join his parents at the age of seven. His interest in fountain pens began at 18, starting with a Parker 51. Today, his personal archive contains more than 80 vintage pens, including a particular selection of 1950s Montblancs.
Ray’s collecting journey took a decisive turn during a 2012 trip to the United States. After spotting an advertisement for the Miami Pen Show—a huge event showcasing exceptional pens, inks and paper goods—he decided to attend. “It blew me away,” Ray told ABASK. The following year, he left his successful career in fashion buying and product development to launch a business sourcing and selling vintage fountain pens internationally.
In more recent years, Ray has created RAW, a bespoke fountain-pen collection named after his full name, Ray Archibald Walters. He collaborates with craftspeople around the world, sourcing materials from specialist German precision nib makers and English engravers before assembling the finished pens in his own studio.

The Repair Shop
On BBC One’s The Repair Shop, Ray Walters is entrusted with restoring objects that carry deep personal meaning. In his barn debut, he works on a fountain pen connected to an extraordinary wartime love story, carefully attempting to bring the treasured item back into working condition.
Siblings Paul Murray and Josette Sellings bring the pen to the barn. Their father, Frank Murray, bought it in Singapore before becoming a prisoner of war after the Japanese capture of the city. During 42 months in captivity, Frank used the pen to write a secret diary in the form of love letters to his sweetheart, Eileen, whom he later married after returning from the war.
Many decades later, the pen is damaged, incomplete and unusable. Ray takes on the painstaking restoration, aiming to return this powerful symbol of Frank and Eileen’s devotion to full working order.
