J.J. Spaun Life-Changing Win At Valero Texas Open
JJ Spaun claimed his maiden PGA Tour victory and secured an invite to The Masters for the first time as he held his nerve over the closing stages to win the Valero Texas Open.
“I believe a year ago to even be on tour, I would have told you I’d have to put in a lot of work to get there,” Spaun said after winning. “But to be here and to overcome a lot of difficulties and ultimately achieve a win, that’s everything you dream of.” It’s fantastic. “I’m at a loss for words.”
“It didn’t affect me as much as you might imagine,” he said of his initial double-bogey. It actually helped me relax a little. I knew there was still a lot of golf ahead of me, and I’d rather double the first hole than the last, so I just felt if I stayed patient and continued grinding away, I’d be in contention with nine holes to play.

Playing at The Masters is something you dream about as a youngster, and I was thinking about it last night. However, there was still a lot to accomplish, and you had to try your best to stay in the present. Staying in the moment and focusing on each stroke at a time is what I think the players that win do best that week, and fortunately, I was able to accomplish that and finish up with the ‘W.’
He also became the first player since Tiger Woods at the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines to win on the PGA Tour after starting his final round with a double-bogey.

J.J. Spaun’s Type 2 Diabetes Misdiagnosis
In March, Spaun told Golf Channel, “I went through two years of battling.” “I’m not blaming anyone for that, but it was a contributing factor.” I was going about my business in the incorrect way. Type 2 diabetes has a different treatment plan than Type 1 diabetes, and I’m not even taking the correct medicine to control my blood sugar.
I was eating nothing, probably less than 1,500 calories a day, and still having high-glucose side effects as a ‘Type 2,’ so that’s why I needed the insulin to help level that out and be able to eat more calories in general.” J.J. Spaun’s first career win came at the perfect time.
The 31-year-old will now get to head to Augusta National for the first time.
Spaun fired a final-round 69 on Sunday to win the Valero Texas Open — which marked the first win of his career in 147 starts. That officially earned him the final spot in the field at the Masters next week.
