William Ellis Porter II is an American actor, singer, writer, and director.

Billy Porter came out as gay when he was 16 years old, “in the middle of the AIDS crisis.”  On January 14, 2017, he married Adam Smith, whom he had met in 2009.  He really wanted to get married “while Obama was still president and before January 20, 2017,” so they got engaged on December 29, 2016, and got married two weeks later.

How Did Billy Porter And Adam Smith Meet For The First Time?

They actually met at a dinner party for mutual friends in February 2009. Smith sat next to Porter, which he later found out was no coincidence. Porter told People that he saw Smith on the street on the way to the party, so when he got there, he made sure to be close to him.

In the end, that chance meeting turned into a long-term relationship. Smith told People, “We were kind of smitten with each other from the start.” Still, the two broke up in 2010. They broke up for five years, but when they got back together in 2015, they knew they were meant to be together.

When Did The Couple Get Married?

In 2017, Porter asked Smith to marry him, and a few weeks later, they made it official and got married.

Adam told sources, “We were talking, and Billy had told me that it’s important for us to get married before January 20 while Barack Obama is still president. So we sat down and figured out when we could get it done before the 20th.”

They were able to do it, and they did a pretty good job of it, too. On January 14, they had a small wedding. “I had 10 days, so I should compose How to Plan a Fabulous Wedding in 10 Days!” Adam later told Playbill a joke. “It was so much fun and went by very quickly. But everything turned out better than I could have hoped.”

According to his LinkedIn, Adam went to the California Institute of the Arts to study theater and got a BFA in 2003.

It’s not clear why he decided to switch, but he started working as a sales rep for Marchon Eyewear soon after he graduated, and his career in high-end eyewear took off from there.

After working for Chanel, Jil Sander Eyewear, and Dita Eyewear, among other designer brands, Adam became a co-owner of Native Ken, which was started by brothers Christos and Tom Tsiplakos in 2010. Adam joined the team in 2016, but he seems to have moved on to other projects since then.

According to the New York Times, Adam was married to someone else before he was married to Billy, but that marriage ended in divorce. Adam has never talked in public about his first marriage, so no one knows who he was married to or how long the marriage lasted.
