Ellis Simms was slammed for an ‘absolute stinker’ of a miss during Coventry City’s FA Cup match at Wolves on Saturday afternoon – before scoring twice and setting up the late winner in their 3-2 shock victory.

Molineux hosted the first of the weekend’s FA Cup quarter-finals, with Premier League Wolves entertaining Championship opposition.

It looked like Simms was going to give the underdogs the advantage in the first half, only but, with the goal at his mercy, he scuffed his shot in front of goal, sending it straight in the direction of the Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Fans on X (formerly Twitter) were not kind, with one asking: ‘How did Simms miss that’, accompanied by a woozy emoji.

Another wrote: ‘Ellis Simms has had an absolute stinker here for Coventry’, with laughing emojis. 

A third added: ‘How on EARTH are Coventry not in the lead?

‘That’s a bad, bad miss from Simms.’

Simms, who was formerly a youth prospect at Everton before leaving for Coventry last year, left Toffees fans in stitches.

One wrote: ‘Ellis Simms thinks he’s still playing for Everton’ along with a trio of joy emojis.

He did go on to score the opening goal of the game in the 53rd minute, only for Rayan Ait-Nouri to equalise with seven minutes of normal time remaining. 

Hugo Bueno put Wolves 2-1 up, and the Premier League side looked to be going through, before Simms nodded home in the seventh minute of stoppage time to level things up once again. 

Simms then turned provider as Haji Wright came up with a winner three minutes later to send Coventry City through at the death.
