Manchester United faced a tough blow in the Europa League against Tottenham Hotspur and are now hoping Spurs don’t disrupt their plans to sign Bryan Mbeumo.

TALKSPORT reports that the Brentford forward is interested in moving to Old Trafford, despite rumors that Spurs might also make a bid. Manchester United are prepared to agree to his £250,000-a-week salary.

However, Arsenal legend Perry Groves has advised the Cameroon international to turn down a potential partnership with Ruben Amorim’s squad in favor of joining Tottenham, who will be participating in the Champions League next season.

United won’t be plying their trade across the continent following their defeat to their Premier League rivals in the final of Europe’s second-tier tournament.

And if Mbeumo does end up in north London, he could be reunited with Brentford boss Thomas Frank, who has verbally agreed to take charge of Spurs following Ange Postecoglou’s sacking.

Mbeumo, who has one year left on his deal at the Gtech Community Stadium, chipped in with 27 Premier League goal contributions in the 2024/25 season, with only Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland scoring more.

Speaking on the Sunday Session, Groves admitted that Tottenham would be best suited for Mbeumo’s progression as a footballer.

He said: “Football-wise, he should go to – and it pains me to say it – he should go to Spurs because of Champions League football and you want to play at the highest level.

“But financially, that’s why Spurs are going to struggle to go at that [potential transfer].”

Before adding: “Because all the top teams pay their top players £200,000-a-week plus.

“Spurs are never going to do that.”

Co-host Ade Oladipo then claimed that Mbeumo would follow Frank to Spurs, but like Groves, believes Tottenham won’t be able to offer him the salary he is expecting.

It’s the same view shared by England legend Stuart Pearce, who has insisted that if the money is right, Mbeumo would choose Spurs over United.

He said on the Sports Breakfast show: “I think it’s the relationship between him and the manager.

“Obviously he gets on very well with him it seems from the outside, and everything comes down to finances as well, if they match his aspirations.

“Thing is with Tottenham as well, he doesn’t have to leave London.

“So if he doesn’t want to change his city in any way shape or form, it’s ideal for him.”

Spurs are yet to formalise their interest in Mbeumo, who has already been the subject of a failed offer from United.

Thomas Frank reveals Brentford could sell Bryan Mbeumo this summer

talkSPORT understands an offer of £45million, plus £10m in add-ons was submitted to Brentford last week.

However, Brentford knocked it back as they hold out for a fee of £60m.

A £60m deal would eclipse their £40m club-record sale of Ivan Toney to Al Ahli last year.
