VENICE, Fla. (WFLA) — The Venice Police Department said a man was arrested and charged in connection with an overdose death that occurred in January.

Justin Companion, aged 41, was detained on October 6th and is accused of distributing heroin to a man who, according to the police, succumbed after consuming the drugs Companion provided.

He faces a charge of second-degree murder under Florida’s Drug-Induced Homicide Law, which permits the prosecution of individuals selling illegal drugs if such transactions lead to a fatality.

“This represents a crucial advancement in our ongoing battle against the damaging impact of illicit narcotics in our locality,” commented Venice Police Chief Andy Leisenring. “The Drug-Induced Homicide Law in Florida endows law enforcement with a potent instrument to hold drug sellers liable for the lives lost due to their actions. Every overdose death is a profound tragedy, and our department is committed to seeking justice for the victims and families affected by this crisis.”

Companion also faces charges of selling a Schedule 1 narcotic and the unlawful use of a two-way communication device. He has been placed in the Sarasota County Jail, where he is currently held without bail.
