A Wisconsin man who struck his girlfriend and her 4-year-old daughter with a car, killing the child, has been sentenced to spend 20 years in prison.
Donald Crayton, 33, received the sentence after pleading guilty to hit-and-run involving death, hit-and-run involving great bodily harm, and reckless homicide tied to the crash that injured 27-year-old Gloria Hymes and killed her daughter, 4-year-old Zekani Hymes-Wilson, according to a report. A criminal complaint reviewed by Law&Crime says Hymes and Zekani were crossing a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, street on the morning of April 30, 2024, on their way to pick up food from a Domino’s near their apartment.
Surveillance footage showed a black Chevrolet Impala speeding into the mother and child, hitting them with enough force to launch them into the air before they fell onto the roadway.
Crayton had also faced additional charges, including knowingly operating a vehicle while suspended causing death, knowingly operating a vehicle while suspended causing great bodily harm, resisting or obstructing an officer, and soliciting someone to flee an officer in a vehicle. Those counts were dismissed, but the court considered them at sentencing after they were read in.
During the sentencing hearing, Crayton voiced remorse. Milwaukee Circuit Court Judge Laura Crivello, however, noted that he had made similar statements when he was sentenced for a 2019 conviction. “[I]t doesn’t ring so true when you say it on a previous date and don’t change your behavior… I don’t know if I buy the remorse,” Crivello said.
Along with the 20-year prison term, Crayton was ordered never to drive again.
