Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Marie Kimberly Brown, aged 58, was taken into custody yesterday related to nine instances of theft, among them the theft of a bottle of Macallan single malt scotch whiskey, priced at $1,229.99. Additional charges for further thefts are under consideration.

On June 3, around 6:09 p.m., Brown along with Everett Beeghley, aged 39, reportedly visited Bath and Body Works located at 3948 SW Archer Road, and departed with merchandise totaling $667.58. Beeghley was apprehended yesterday at the CVS situated at 1613 SW 13th Street and is facing charges related to three theft cases, in addition to two charges of organized retail theft for allegedly making repeated thefts from CVS and Lowe’s, exceeding five occurrences each within a span of 30 days.

During the early hours of June 4, around 1:09 a.m., Brown and Beeghley arrived at the CVS at 1621 SW 13th Street. An employee, familiar with Brown as a frequent shoplifter, requested her to exit the premises. Despite this, Brown and Beeghley are accused of swiftly loading items into a cart and making away with products valued at $598.07, before departing in a red pickup truck.

At about 6:45 p.m. on June 4, The Good Pour (5180 SW 34th Street) reported that Brown selected a bottle of Macallan Harmony Collection Fine Single Malt Scotch Whiskey, put the bottle in a duffle bag, walked out of the store without paying, and then left in a silver Ford Edge.

A Gainesville Police Department detective reviewed surveillance video from the store and immediately recognized Brown as a “prolific thief” who has committed numerous thefts over the past month but has evaded capture.

At about 9:25 p.m. on June 4, Brown went to the CVS at 3904 NW 13th Street and filled a shopping cart with items valued at $106.94 before allegedly walking out without paying about two minutes later. The responding detective reported that Brown had stolen items from the same store “NUMEROUS” times over the past two months, depriving CVS of thousands of dollars’ worth of inventory. The detective noted that he had given his number to employees with instructions to call, even late at night, if Brown entered the store because she had “between 20-30 KNOWN theft cases… in the past several months.”

At about 9:45 a.m. on June 5, Brown allegedly went to the Dollar General at 2112 SW 13th Street and selected various items before pushing her cart out without paying and loading most of the items into a silver Ford Edge. The store manager confronted her and pulled the cart away from her, but she allegedly got into the car and drove away with items valued at $69.15.

At about 12:25 p.m. on June 5, the detective learned that Brown was inside the Haven Hospice Attic (300 NW 8th Avenue), where she allegedly selected $50 in shoes and clothing, concealed them in a large laundry hamper, and tried to walk out but was detained by the detective and finally arrested.

Brown has been charged in nine felony theft cases, and eight more are currently pending. She has 47 felony convictions (six violent) and 13 misdemeanor convictions (three violent); she has served 11 prison sentences, almost all out of Alachua County, with her most recent release in January 2022. Judge Denise Ferrero set bail at $500,000.

Beeghley has been charged with six felonies and four misdemeanors, all related to shoplifting. He has five misdemeanor convictions (one violent), and Judge Ferrero set his bail at $270,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
