Inset: Desmond Potts (Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office). Background: The Kentucky apartment complex where Desmond Potts allegedly attacked a pregnant woman who lived with him (WAVE).
A Louisville man is accused of violently assaulting a pregnant woman carrying twins, leaving her with a ruptured placenta, a lacerated liver and injuries that required an emergency C-section, police said.
Desmond Potts, 31, allegedly dragged the woman back into the home as she tried to get away during the attack, according to court documents obtained by local NBC affiliate WAVE. Investigators say he later grabbed a knife, threatened to kill the woman and her unborn children, and assaulted a 9-year-old child who attempted to intervene.
The confrontation began Thursday at the residence, where Potts and the victim were arguing, the documents state. Potts allegedly pressed his forehead into the woman’s forehead before grabbing her and throwing her onto a couch, prompting the 9-year-old to jump on his back in an effort to stop the assault.
Potts then allegedly grabbed the child by the neck and pinned the boy against a wall, according to the court records.
After forcing the pregnant woman back inside, Potts allegedly held the knife to her stomach and threatened to kill her children, the documents say. He is accused of dragging her through the home, slamming her to the floor, then taking her back outside and dragging her down a flight of stairs before turning his attention again to the 9-year-old.

Police said the boy returned with another child and once more jumped on Potts’ back. Potts allegedly grabbed him by the back of the neck and pinned him against another wall.
A neighbor who heard the disturbance called police. After officers arrived, the victim fainted and was taken to a hospital.
Doctors reported multiple injuries that led to the emergency C-section, including a serious liver laceration and the ruptured placenta. The 9-year-old also reported having neck pain, per WAVE.
Potts was arrested Friday and charged with first-degree assault (domestic violence), first-degree unlawful imprisonment, first-degree wanton endangerment, fourth-degree assault (child abuse), third-degree terroristic threatening, and menacing.
He is due in court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 31.
The condition of the woman and her twins is unknown.
