Police investigate 'suspicious death' of woman whose car was allegedly hit by a kangaroo

Police responded to reports that a woman had stopped breathing near Barkly Homestead on the Barkly Highway in the Avon Downs district about 5.50am on Sunday, April 5 after a car she was in was reportedly hit by a kangaroo.

A tragic incident unfolded with the death of a 27-year-old woman, discovered at the scene, prompting the swift arrest of a 33-year-old man. He is currently in police custody, and initial investigations suggest that the two were involved in a relationship.

Authorities have pieced together that a man and woman were situated in a dark-coloured Jeep Cherokee near the intersection of the Barkly and Tablelands Highways in the early hours of Sunday, between 1:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.

It is believed that the couple traveled in the Jeep from Gympie, Queensland, to Barkly Homestead over a span of several days, from April 1 to April 5. Police are keen on gathering any further details about this journey.

Investigators are appealing to the public for assistance, specifically requesting any information or dashcam footage from drivers who might have been in that vicinity during the specified time frame. If you have seen the vehicle or have relevant information, you are encouraged to contact the police directly or provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.

It is believed that they passed through Ban Ban Springs, Emerald, Winton, Cloncurry, Mt Isa and Camooweal in Queensland.

Police are searching for information or dashcam footage from drivers who were in that area at that time.
