A man involved in a crash in Deerfield Beach, Florida, allegedly carjacked a woman who stopped to help (WSVN).
A 46-year-old man from Florida is accused of crashing his SUV, carjacking a woman who stopped to assist him, and then making his way to a Chick-fil-A where he allegedly snatched a french fry from a child.
The suspect, Cory Coddington, is facing multiple charges including aggravated assault, carjacking, petty theft, and leaving the scene of an accident, as reported by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.
The bizarre sequence of events unfolded just before noon on Saturday along the 500 block of East Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach. Authorities received numerous calls after a man, later identified as Coddington, reportedly collided with a tree while driving his SUV. A witness, Shyann Figaro, shared with ABC affiliate WSVN that she approached Coddington to check on his well-being after witnessing the crash.
“He took my car,” she recounted. “I got out to help, and he ended up stealing my vehicle and driving off.”
Coddington is said to have then driven to a local Chick-fil-A, where witnesses reported he emerged from the vehicle covered in blood, as per NBC affiliate WTVJ.
“A guy asked him, ‘Are you okay?’ and he replied, ‘Does it look like I’m okay?’” recalled witness Laurence Lebel.
The suspect then stole a french fry from a child and said he wanted a milkshake, Lebel said. The child received a new order of fries free of charge — but Coddington was not done with his alleged crime spree.
He reportedly walked over to a gas station, where deputies confronted him. He was allegedly combative with cops before they took him into custody. Coddington was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment. Deputies say they recovered more than 10 grams of MDMA, widely known as ecstasy or molly, from the defendant.
Lebel told WTVJ that after the incident was over, she found it amusing.
“We’re not from here,” she said. “We don’t see this every day.”
