Police seek pair after birthday party descends into chaos in Sydney's south-west
The hunt for two men continues following the “shocking” stabbing of a 17-year-old boy at a Sydney house party that left him fighting for life.
Officers were called to Sedgman Crescent at Shalvey in the city’s south-west about 10.40pm yesterday over initial reports a shot had been fired at the gathering.

A teenager has been the victim of a brutal stabbing, suffering several wounds to his abdomen, a stab to his ribs, and another to his shoulder, according to Superintendent Darrin Batchelor. “It was a frenzied and horrific attack on this young man,” Batchelor stated.

The injured teen was discovered at a nearby property following the violent incident. Witnesses reported overhearing someone say, “I just stabbed him,” in the aftermath of the attack.

Superintendent Batchelor expressed his dismay over the situation, questioning why young individuals carry knives, leading to such tragic outcomes. “We now have a 17-year-old boy who is in critical condition in the hospital,” he noted.

“We were concerned about the underage drinking that we’d seen on the street, and we just knew that that was going to be a recipe for disaster,” a witness told 9News.

The property involved in the incident was an Airbnb rental. The owner disclosed to 9News that the booking was made just hours before the gathering, using a parent’s account, under the guise of a small family event.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital in a critical but stable condition.

“I don’t understand why young people carry knives and we have situations like this where we now have a 17-year-old boy who is in a critical condition in hospital,” Batchelor said.

Investigations determined a brawl had earlier broken out in the driveway after 40 people attended the property, hired on Airbnb by party organisers.

The Airbnb owner told 9News that the rental had been booked just hours before the party by a parent’s account for a small family gathering.

It is understood that the gathering blew up after the Airbnb location was posted to Facebook, claiming it was an open house party.

Some residents are adamant they heard gunshots at the scene, however Batchelor said investigators had not found evidence of a firearm being used at the house.

“That call was made to triple zero to get police attending as urgently as possible,” he said.

Police had recovered knives at the crime scene, he said.

After examining CCTV images and witness interviews, police are seeking two young men of Sudanese background who had been walking to the party.

Batchelor said police were still trying to establish the link between the victim and the pair.

He described the stabbing as “shocking” and said investigators were not ruling out that it was a “chance altercation”.

The party was initially attended by a small group of guests, but the number grew to about 40, police said.
