A Texas-based plastic surgeon, celebrated for his “precision and artistry” and “exceptional patient care,” now faces serious legal trouble after allegedly conducting surgery while intoxicated.
Azul Shirazali Jaffer, aged 50, has been indicted in Fort Bend County on a felony charge related to performing surgery under the influence, as reported by the Sugar Land Police Department.
Authorities allege that Jaffer operated on a patient in August while impaired, though it remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs were involved. According to his professional website, Jaffer boasts over two decades of experience in plastic surgery and maintains a five-star rating at his Houston practice.
The website describes Dr. Jaffer as delivering “highly personalized plastic surgery services” aimed at enhancing patients’ lives with “unparalleled patient care.” It highlights his reputation as a double board-certified surgeon known for precision and artistry, promising the highest standard of care for facial, breast, and body procedures.
The site further emphasizes Jaffer’s dedication to achieving “natural-looking results” that align with patient goals, claiming safety and satisfaction are “always our top priority.” Despite these assurances, Jaffer has a history of legal challenges in the medical field.
Earlier this year, a lawsuit accused Jaffer of sexually assaulting a patient in a recovery room following a breast augmentation in 2022. The legal action cites charges of assault, sexual assault, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and gross negligence.
Another case was filed by the victim in 2022 with similar allegations, but the woman asked a court to dismiss it before filing her most recent suit this year, which is still pending. A Texas trial court and court of appeals denied Jaffer’s motion to throw out the first case last year.
“Maestas alleges that she woke up in the recovery room to Dr. Jaffer pressing his penis against her feet, rubbing her … with his ungloved hand then putting her fingers in her mouth,” court documents state.
Jaffer’s office declined to comment when reached by Law&Crime on Tuesday. A lawyer representing the alleged assault victim told the Houston Chronicle that police have been investigating her claims against Jaffer. The attorney, Tony Buzbee, says two other alleged victims have come forward with similar claims.
“Our civil case is ongoing,” Buzbee told the Chronicle.
