A New York man who allegedly tried to kill his parents on Christmas was indicted in court on Monday.

Dino Tomassetti, 30, pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree assault, and endangering the welfare of the child for a December 25 shooting at his parents’ Long Island mansion. The Long Island Herald reported that Tomassetti is accused of shooting his mother in the head and his father in the back during a custody dispute regarding his 2-year-old son.

The mother of Tomassetti’s son and the toddler were in the room at the time of the shooting. Tomassetti, a bodybuilder, allegedly fled the scene but he was arrested the same day in Bergen County, New Jersey.

According to the New York Post, Tomassetti cried during Monday’s court hearing while looking at his father, who underwent surgery for his injuries. The news outlet noted that the shooting suspect needed three sets of handcuffs to restrain his arms.

Defense attorney William Petrillo told the judge that the mother of Tomasetti’s child and Tomasetti’s mother and father were in the courtroom and are supporting the shooting suspect, according to Newsday.

Tomasetti remains jailed without bail. The 2-year-old boy is in the custody of his mother, Newsday reported.
