A shooting outside a Target store in Austin on Monday left three people dead, one injured, and a suspect in custody.
At 2:15 p.m., police received reports of gunfire at the Target on Research Boulevard, the Austin American-Statesmen reports.
Authorities reported that a male suspect commandeered a vehicle from the Target parking lot and drove away, with the car’s owner among those found shot in the store’s parking area.
After crashing the stolen vehicle, the suspect proceeded to steal another car from a nearby dealership.
The Austin Police Department confirmed that two individuals were declared dead at the location, while a third victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where they eventually succumbed to their injuries.
A fourth person received treatment for injuries.
Law enforcement used a Taser to subdue the suspect, capturing him in south Austin, in the 2400 block of La Costa Court, located approximately 18.5 miles from the Target site.
ABC News reports that, so far, police have only identified the suspect as a 32-year-old white male with a history of mental illness.
“This is a very somber day for Austin,” Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis stated during a press briefing Monday afternoon. “This is a very difficult time for all of us.”
