A 46-year-old Texas man will spend the rest of his days behind bars after fatally stabbing his mother 10 times and then going on the run.

Jeffrey Bennett Flowers received a life sentence for the murder of his 72-year-old mother, Jeanette Flowers, in 2021. The incident took place at their home in Rowlett, a suburb of Dallas, as reported by prosecutors.

On July 4, 2021, Rowlett police discovered Jeanette’s body during a welfare check. She had sustained about 10 stab wounds inflicted by an unknown object, and there were attempts to clean the crime scene.

Investigators quickly identified Jeffrey Flowers as the primary suspect. It was revealed he had stolen a temporary license plate, attaching it to his vehicle. Phone records indicated he had his mother’s cellphone while fleeing. He later crashed his car near I-635 and U.S. 75/Central Expressway in Dallas and subsequently stole a truck from a nearby gas station.

Authorities tracked him by using the owner’s phone left in the stolen truck, following it to Freestone County, over 100 miles south of Rockwall, as stated by prosecutors.

DNA evidence from the crime scene and under Jeanette Flowers’ fingernails matched Jeffrey Flowers, suggesting she attempted to defend herself. Neighbors reported hearing arguments between them in the days before the murder. The press release did not specify a motive.

Assistant District Attorney Marcia Taylor, the lead prosecutor, remarked, “Jeanette Flowers was taken from her loved ones by the actions of her son, whom she only tried to support. The combined efforts of law enforcement, digital and medical experts, as well as family and neighbors, solved this terrible crime and brought some closure to those who cherished Jeanette.”

The victim worked as a CPA and enjoyed spending time outdoors and with family, her obituary said.
