A severely burned body was discovered Saturday morning by a hiker at Stone Mountain, a frequently visited Georgia landmark.
Fox 5 reported that the hiker contacted 911 after discovering the body near the mountain’s top in a secluded area not often visited by the public. The body was found in proximity to the cable cars used by guests to travel to and from the mountain’s peak.
“The body was positioned under a rock ledge, with rocks piled in front to keep it concealed,” stated John Bankhead from the Stone Mountain Park Police Department. “There are numerous rocks in this area of the mountain. It’s not a spot where hikers typically venture. It’s secluded—people are generally unaware of its existence.”
Bankhead called the scene “one of the weirdest” he has ever seen and described it as “unusual.”
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the case.
The DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to help determine the person’s identity and cause of death.
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities are reaching out for any information regarding the incident—or the identity of the person who reported the finding.
