A startling development arose in a recent investigation when surveillance footage captured McKee entering the Tepe residence’s “curtilage” on December 6. This area, which encompasses the immediate surroundings of a home, is legally regarded as an extension of the dwelling under the Fourth Amendment, highlighting the serious nature of his intrusion.
On the same day, Monique and Spencer were out of town, attending the Big 10 Championship game. During the game’s second half, Monique unexpectedly returned to their hotel room. This coincided with McKee’s presence at the Tepe home. When friends inquired about her sudden departure, Spencer explained that Monique was distressed over issues related to her ex-husband.
Further complicating the timeline, McKee’s phone was left inactive at St. Anthony Hospital in Rockford, showing no activity for approximately 17 hours from December 29 until shortly after noon on December 30. This suspicious lack of communication raises questions about his whereabouts during the critical period of the homicides.
Compelling testimonies from friends and family paint a grim picture of Monique’s past with McKee. They describe him as abusive, recounting numerous threats against her life both during and after their marriage. Allegations of forced intimacy and strangulation further underscore the danger McKee posed. He reportedly threatened Monique, asserting that he could end her life at will and declaring that she would always be his wife, even suggesting he would buy the house next door to maintain control over her.
Friends and family tell investigators how Monique’s ex-husband McKee had been abusive and made numerous threats on her life during and after their marriage.
Friends and family also tell investigators that McKee would force Monique into unwanted sex and strangulation. McKee tells Monique he can kill her any time he wants; he will buy the house right next door to her, and she is always going to be his wife.
