In the early hours of the morning in Gainesville, Florida, a tense domestic dispute escalated into an arrest. Ramone Ron Young Jr., aged 34, was taken into custody after allegedly threatening a relative with a firearm. Compounding his legal troubles, Young also faces charges for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

According to reports, it was around 1 a.m. on May 28 when officers from the Gainesville Police Department responded to a call about an armed disturbance in the Northeast Neighbors area. Upon arrival, they encountered Young outside the residence. The situation intensified as officers aimed their weapons at Young, inquiring about the location of the firearm. Young reportedly denied having a gun, leading to his immediate detainment in handcuffs.

The altercation involved a close family member who lives with Young. The victim recounted a heated argument during which Young allegedly brandished a black handgun, aiming it at her head and threatening her life. She claimed that Young subsequently fled outside, discarding the weapon in the front yard. Although no witnesses were present to corroborate her account, Young was reportedly on a call with his mother during the incident.

A police K-9 unit later discovered a .40 caliber black handgun concealed in a bush on the property, substantiating parts of the victim’s narrative. Following his Miranda rights, Young provided a different version of events. He claimed that during their argument, the victim herself brandished a black handgun but did not aim it at him. According to Young, a friend of the victim intervened, urging him to secure the firearm from her. He alleged that the victim then handed him the gun, prompting him to dispose of it outside to prevent further escalation. Young reportedly refused to allow officers to speak with his mother, who might have shed more light on the situation.

A K-9 team reportedly found a .40 caliber black handgun in a bush in the front yard.

Post Miranda, Young reportedly said that while he was arguing with the victim, she pulled out a black handgun and started waving it around but never pointed it at him. He said a friend of the victim came inside the house and told Young to take the gun away from the victim; he said the victim also told him to take the gun and then gave him the gun. He said he went outside and threw the gun in a bush to keep it away from the victim. He reportedly refused to let officers speak to his mother.

An officer reported that surveillance video shows the victim talking to a friend in a vehicle before the incident, but the friend drives away and never comes into the house. Later, Young can be seen running out of the house and pulling his shirt up next to the bush where the gun was found.

Young has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He has two felony convictions (one violent) and has served two state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2016. Judge Meshon Rawls ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
