A 34-year-old Royal Caribbean cruise ship employee is facing multiple state and federal felony charges for allegedly hiding cameras in the bathrooms of multiple passengers, many of whom were underage girls, and surreptitiously taping them in various states of undress.
Arvin J. Mirasol, who allegedly said that he would hide under passengers’ beds to film them naked, was taken into custody over the weekend in Florida and charged by the state with six counts of video voyeurism and by the federal government with one count each of producing child pornography and possessing child pornography, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.
According to an arrest report from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Mirasol was a stateroom attendant on the Symphony of the Seas ship, which left from Port Everglades, Florida, on Feb. 24 and returned on March 3. Also onboard the ship for the cruise was the victim, a juvenile female, who was staying in a cabin with her mother and older sister.
The day after the ship left port, the victim said she was in her private bathroom “when she reached under the sink to get a roll of toilet paper” and “observed a hidden camera affixed to the counter underneath the sink.” The victim said she had used the bathroom multiple times since boarding the ship “while in a state of undress” and had not provided consent to anyone to record her in the bathroom.
The ship’s security was immediately notified and responded to the room. While security was interviewing the victim and her family, Mirasol entered the room and was detained and placed in a guarded confinement room on the ship until it returned to port several days later and he was arrested.
Authorities also seized Mirasol’s electronic devices, which included a cellphone, a micro SD card, a camera, an Apple watch, and a USB stick. A forensic exam of the devices revealed that the USB stick contained “numerous videos of naked females undressing in the bathroom as well as videos of child pornography,” federal authorities wrote in a probable cause affidavit.
Authorities said that on his cellphone, Mirasol had performed searches such as “hidden cameras” and “teen on bed.”
In a subsequent interview with state and federal agents, Mirasol allegedly admitted to using his position as a stateroom attendant, in which is he responsible for cleaning the guests’ rooms and restocking towels, to place his camera in the bathrooms of certain guests. He would then retrieve the cameras and pleasure himself to the videos, the affidavit states.
Mirasol allegedly confessed that he’d begun putting the hidden cameras in guests’ bathrooms since he was hired to work on the ship in December 2023.
“I want to control it, but I can’t,” Mirasol allegedly told investigators.
Asked about how he decides where to put the camera, Marisol allegedly responded, “If I like who’s in that room, I place it,” adding that he would typically choose “females approximately 16 and over in age.”
In addition to the hidden camera, Mirasol also allegedly admitted to participating in an even riskier form of video voyeurism.
“Marisol also stated that while the guests were taking a shower, he would enter the rooms and hide under the bed while recording them naked with his cellular device,” authorities wrote.
Marisol, a citizen of the Republic of the Philippines, is currently being held in the Broward County Jail without bond.
“We immediately reported this to law enforcement and terminated the crew member, and we will continue to fully cooperate with authorities,” the company wrote.
