A 33-year-old New York man has been accused of killing his father, allegedly stabbing the 69-year-old approximately 40 times while the victim called 911 and screamed that he was being murdered.

Sage Arias-Brown was arrested and indicted on a second-degree murder charge in connection with the death of his father, Edward Brown, authorities said.

According to a news release from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, Arias-Brown allegedly entered Brown’s studio apartment in Mastic at about 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 7 and launched a violent attack that neighboring residents could hear.

“A neighbor heard a loud bang, followed by the victim screaming,” prosecutors said. “The victim was able to call 911 during the attack. The 911 call captured the victim screaming, ‘I’m being murdered. What are you doing to me, Sage?’”

The neighbor reportedly saw Arias-Brown leave his father’s apartment several minutes after the emergency call was made.

Suffolk County police officers responding to the apartment found Arias-Brown walking along a road roughly half a mile away and took him into custody, prosecutors said.

Inside the apartment, officers discovered Brown unresponsive and covered in blood. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

The medical examiner’s autopsy determined that Brown had suffered approximately 40 stab wounds to his torso, chest and neck.

“This defendant is accused of viciously taking the life of his 69-year-old father as the victim desperately called the police for help,” Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said. “The facts in this case are heartbreaking. This indictment is an important step towards holding the defendant accountable for the brutal violence he allegedly inflicted on his own parent.”

Arias-Brown was arraigned Sept. 17 before Acting Supreme Court Justice Richard I. Horowitz, who ordered that he remain jailed without bond. He is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 21.

If convicted, Arias-Brown could face 25 years to life in a state correctional facility.
