Sean “Diddy” Combs was unsuccessful in his attempt to postpone the trial, and today marks the beginning of jury selection, coinciding with the Met Gala where many of his former celebrity friends will be present. Combs attended court in glasses and a pullover, as Judge Arun Subramanian permitted him to forgo wearing prison attire during the trial. The judge also allowed the use of a written jury questionnaire, though it was capped at 30 questions.
The defense aims to gain an understanding of prospective jurors’ opinions on matters such as having multiple sexual partners, infidelity, intimate partner violence, drug use, rap music, and illegal firearm possession. Prosecutors might call Jennifer Lopez to the stand as they seek to introduce evidence tied to the 1999 Club NY incident. Lopez and Combs left the club after shots were fired, injuring three individuals.
Combs’ legal team refutes all accusations of rape, claiming he engages in a consensual swinger lifestyle. Attorney Marc Agnifilo argued in court that Combs’ actions are both legal and misconceived. Prosecutors plan to argue that Combs exploited his enterprises to organize “Freak Offs” that included male prostitutes and women supposedly coerced into sexual activities.
At Combs’ last pretrial hearing, prosecutors said he rejected a plea deal. Federal prosecutor Madison Smyser confirmed the offer but declined to disclose the terms. Opening statements are scheduled for May 12.
