Darrell Briggs, aged 85, was released on a $50,000 bond following his arrest for allegedly fleeing the scene of a fatal accident. The incident took place around 5 p.m. on a Friday at a Publix supermarket parking lot in St. Petersburg, Florida. Reports suggest Briggs, while driving, hit 91-year-old Mary Broughton and then exited the parking area. He subsequently drove back to his apartment, as detailed by local Fox affiliate WTVT.

Broughton was transported to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Officers from the St. Petersburg Police Department located Briggs at his apartment, where they discovered the vehicle allegedly involved in the incident. Court records accessed by WFLA indicate that Briggs confessed to officers that he was aware of hitting “something” but decided to leave the scene rather than stop.

Briggs was taken into custody and charged with the felony of leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in death. After posting a $50,000 bond, he was released from the Pinellas County Jail on Sunday. Details about his next court appearance have not been disclosed to the public.
