The Federal Bureau of Investigation has launched an inquiry into the unexpected death of a high school senior from Florida, who was discovered deceased on a Carnival cruise ship.
Reports from ABC News reveal that Anna Kepner tragically passed away on Saturday while aboard the Carnival Horizon. The cruise ship was on a voyage from Miami to the Caribbean, and Kepner’s death occurred on the final day of the journey.
The investigation is being spearheaded by the FBI’s Miami office, although the specific cause of Kepner’s death has not yet been disclosed.
Carnival Cruise Line expressed their commitment to assisting Kepner’s family and cooperating fully with the FBI, stating, “Our focus is on supporting the family of our guest and cooperating with the FBI.”
Kepner’s family remembered her as a top-performing student with a vibrant and cheerful personality. She was beloved for her sociable nature and had a passion for volunteering in the 55+ community where her grandparents reside in Titusville.
“Anna had an infectious energy that was immediately apparent through her smile and demeanor. Engaging with her was effortless,” her family shared in a heartfelt statement.
She also loved being near the water and earned her scuba certification and boater’s license.
Kepner had plans to join the military after finishing her senior year in high school.
“She was already talking to recruiters and had chosen her career path. She wanted to do something that would help her community,” the family said.
“She was the best child you could ever meet. We’ll always remember her for who she was.”
Authorities are currently interviewing passengers aboard the cruise and reviewing video footage.
“Because this is an ongoing matter, no further information is available at this time,” FBI Miami Special Agent Willie Creech told People Magazine.
