A Florida man who said he was high on fentanyl and LSD allegedly stabbed his dog to death and nearly decapitated her, according to police.
The Coral Springs Police Department arrested 58-year-old Steven Douglas McKinney on an aggravated animal abuse charge. According to a probable cause arrest affidavit reviewed by Law&Crime, McKinney’s roommate called police around 9 a.m. Feb. 13 saying McKinney killed his own dog on the back porch of their home. While speaking with dispatchers, the roommate said McKinney grabbed the knife again and cut himself in the neck.
When officers arrived, McKinney allegedly told them “I killed Katie,” which is the name of the dog. Cops found the dog dead on the porch, her head nearly severed from her body.
“The dog’s eyes were open, and its tongue was hanging out of its mouth,” officers wrote in the affidavit. “The dog was soaked in blood, as was the dog bed.”

One of McKinney’s roommates told police he was awoken by the “sound of a dog yelping and crying loudly and fearfully,” the affidavit said. He looked out to the patio area and allegedly saw McKinney trying to take the dog’s head off while it was still alive. The roommate yelled out and McKinney reportedly said “I lost it, I killed Katie.” His roommates called 911 and while they were talking with dispatchers, he picked up the bloody knife and started to cut his neck.
A roommate snatched the knife from McKinney and put it inside. The roommates said McKinney told them he was “detoxing from fentanyl,” according to the affidavit.
Detectives went to the hospital and talked to McKinney. He told them he was high on fentanyl and LSD which caused him to have a mental breakdown. After he was released from the hospital, officers took him to the Brevard County Jail where he remains on a $75,000 bond.
