GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In the early hours of the morning, 28-year-old Elijah Dantrell Welch was taken into custody on charges of domestic battery and child neglect. His arrest followed an incident where he allegedly ignored repeated commands from law enforcement, resulting in a K-9 unit being deployed.

At approximately 1:03 a.m. on November 15, deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an apartment at Majestic Oaks. The response was triggered by two concerned neighbors who reported hearing sounds of a physical altercation. Both callers expressed concern for the woman residing there, suspecting she might be pregnant.

When deputies arrived and knocked on the door, a woman emerged, stating that she was stepping out to call 911. She was instructed by the deputies to gather her children and exit the apartment, allowing law enforcement to engage with Welch.

Welch was informed that failure to comply would result in a K-9 being sent in. Despite his claims that nothing physical had transpired, he retreated into a locked bedroom upon the K-9’s arrival. Subsequently, he was bitten after allegedly disregarding commands to surrender.

The investigation revealed that earlier in the evening, Welch, reportedly intoxicated, had fallen asleep on a bed in the living room with the children while the woman remained in her bedroom. The situation escalated when she discovered Welch urinating on the bed where the children lay, using the bedroom door frame for support. A confrontation ensued, during which Welch allegedly choked the woman. They separated to defuse the tension, but upon checking the children, the woman discovered urine on one child’s sleeve and, hearing the child express fear of Welch, she went outside to contact the authorities. It was at this moment that deputies arrived at the scene.

Welch has been charged with aggravated battery on a pregnant woman, child neglect without great bodily harm, and resisting an officer without violence. He has one local misdemeanor conviction (non-violent). Judge Kristine Van Vorst ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
