Gainesville Man Sentenced to 12 Years for Child Pornography

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Matt Kevin McMillin, 63, will serve 12 years in state prison and then spend 10 years on Sex Offender Probation after pleading nolo contendere to 10 counts of possessing 10 or more images of child pornography and one count of unlawful use of a two-way communications device.

Original arrest

The case began when a Gainesville Police Department detective reviewed a CyberTip involving child sexual abuse material, or CSAM, linked to a Dropbox account. Investigators said the tip included 15 images uploaded from an account listed under the name “Kevin McMillin.” After serving Dropbox with a subpoena, police reported finding additional CSAM and child erotica images, along with “numerous” photos and videos of a white male. Among the files were images of a Florida driver’s license issued to Matt Kevin McMillin and an expired Colorado driver’s license in the same name.

Gainesville police executed a search warrant at McMillin’s residence in Buckingham East, in the 8400 block of Northwest 6th Avenue, at about 8 a.m. on July 19, 2025. After being advised of his Miranda rights, McMillin reportedly acknowledged that the Dropbox account belonged to him. He described the images as “pure handling of something that wasn’t understood” and denied recognizing the material found in the account.

Plea and sentence

On July 28, 2026, McMillin entered a nolo contendere plea to all 11 charges. According to the plea paperwork, the combined maximum sentence he faced was 155 years in prison.

Judge James Colaw imposed five concurrent 12-year prison terms, with credit for 26 days already served, on five of the possession counts. McMillin also received a concurrent five-year sentence for unlawful use of a two-way communications device. For the remaining five possession counts, the judge ordered 10 years of Sex Offender Probation. McMillin will be classified as a Sexual Offender and must complete a psychosexual evaluation within 45 days of his release, then successfully finish any recommended treatment on the first attempt. While on probation, he is barred from unsupervised contact with minors.
