A mother has been taken into custody after her 9-year-old son brought her loaded and unsecured firearm to his elementary school earlier in the month and discharged it at a toilet in a school bathroom, resulting in its destruction.
Deevashea Webb was charged with a misdemeanor reckless conduct for failing to secure the 9mm handgun properly, WSB reported.
Gwinnett County School Police said Webb kept the gun in a lockbox with a broken lock and that she knew the lock was broken but didn’t fix it.
The boy took the loaded gun to school in his backpack on August 14.
Following the incident, the Gwinnett County School Board decided to deploy unarmed security officers to patrol the perimeters of elementary schools to ensure that doors remain locked, despite the fact that the event was unrelated to an unlocked door.
Weapons detectors are being installed in middle and high schools in the suburban Atlanta county but not elementary schools.
Webb was arrested on August 20 and released on a $1,500 bond.
Authorities mentioned that the boy had earlier made a threat to use the gun to shoot at the toilet, as reported by WANF. The child was apprehended and is believed to be facing legal charges. Fortunately, no one was present in the bathroom during the incident.
The arrest warrant for Webb revealed that she informed investigators of her usual practice of inspecting her sons’ backpacks before they head to school, but she admitted to failing to do so on that particular day.
