Two people were shot and killed in a domestic violence incident this week in front of an Illinois middle school.
One of the victims was the school’s assistant principal, Nerissa Lee, 46.
Dr. Michelle Smith, the Superintendent of Berwyn North School District 98, announced with deep sorrow that Nerissa Lee, the Assistant Principal at Lincoln Middle School, passed away in the tragic shooting that took place outside Lincoln yesterday.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the shooter as Steven Lee, her 54-year-old husband, who was discovered dead in a vehicle from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Nerissa Lee’s sister told WMAQ that their mother was the other victim in the shooting.
Police reported that nearby officers heard gunshots and witnessed Lee shooting a rifle at another vehicle while approaching the scene Tuesday afternoon, according to WLS. He pointed the weapon at the officers as they neared; they took cover but did not fire back.
A neighbor showed the station security footage in which more than a dozen gunshots could be heard.
The Berwyn Police Department stated, “During these trying times, we are prepared to assist Berwyn North School District 98 in any capacity. We encourage community members to come together and provide mutual support as we face this tragedy.”
They continued, “As we further investigate the details of this incident, we are dedicated to safeguarding our community and supporting all those impacted by this tragedy.”
Lee’s sister, Shana Everage, told WMAQ that the shooting “didn’t come out of the blue.”
“It had started ever since, I want to say the tail end of June,” she said. “And basically, the boiling point would have been [Tuesday].”
