A Minnesota man has admitted guilt after his wife was fatally run over when she jumped from their moving pickup during an argument as they traveled at least 50 mph.
Jeremy Micheal Davidson, 49, pleaded guilty to first-degree driving while intoxicated in the death of Melissa Davidson, 46. Under the plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed the criminal vehicular homicide charges and will seek a three-year prison sentence at his Dec. 17 sentencing hearing.
According to the criminal complaint, deputies responded Nov. 22 to a report of a possible crash near County Road 17 and 310th Street in Sibley County, roughly 70 miles southwest of Minneapolis.
The caller told authorities that Davidson’s wife had jumped from the vehicle and was then struck by it, according to the complaint.
Officers found a Dodge Ram pickup stopped at the scene with its engine still running. Jeremy Davidson was discovered lying on top of the truck and had to be removed by law enforcement.
Investigators said Davidson showed clear signs of intoxication.
The complaint states that officers smelled alcohol on him and noticed that his speech was slurred.
Davidson told police that he and Melissa had been drinking earlier that night before he drove them home.
He reportedly said Melissa became angry while they were on the road, began punching him and then “got p—ed” before jumping from the truck, according to the complaint.
Davidson said he told her to stop, after which she opened the door and leaped from the vehicle.
He declined to perform field sobriety tests at the scene. However, officials said he became highly talkative after his arrest and continued speaking while inside a patrol car.
“Prison. I am going to prison, she’s dead,” Davidson allegedly said, according to squad-car camera footage reviewed by investigators.
He also reportedly said, “I killed my wife.”
At other points, Davidson appeared stunned by what had happened and questioned why his wife had left the moving truck.
“Just gets drunk, jumps out of a f—ing truck,” he said. “Make it make sense.”
He later described the incident as “one drunk dumb f—ing move” and said: “I just killed my wife dude. I don’t know why the f— would you jump out of a truck doing f—ing 50 miles per hour. Why would you do that.”
During the conversation, Davidson also appeared to express a wish that the tragedy could be reversed.
“Bring her back,” he allegedly said. “I will go for life. Just bring my wife back.”
Melissa Davidson was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The complaint notes that Jeremy Davidson was convicted of felony DWI in 2007.
