A Florida man is facing a felony charge after authorities say he brandished a weapon and shouted threats at passengers aboard a city bus in Miami Beach.
Demetrius Byrd, 40, was arrested Monday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where jail records show he is being held on a $5,000 bond. According to an arrest report reviewed by Law&Crime, officers were called Monday morning to an intersection in Miami Beach after receiving reports that a man armed with a knife was threatening riders on a Miami-Dade Transit bus.
Once on board, police spoke with the bus driver, who said she saw Byrd get into an altercation with another passenger. The driver told investigators Byrd allegedly waved a knife at people on the bus and yelled, “Who wants to die today?”
Local independent news station WPLG reported that Byrd was once a standout college football player for the Louisiana State University Tigers. He was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the 2009 NFL Draft but never appeared in a game for the team.
