Accused Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Rex Heuermann’s Defense Team Battles with Prosecution Over Expert Witness

Rex Heuermann, alleged to be the Gilgo Beach serial killer, is actively seeking to have charges dropped in the 1993 slaying of Sandra Castillo.

The Massapequa Post reports that Heuermann’s legal representatives recently filed a motion to dismiss the second-degree murder charge during a court session earlier this month. This request was made in front of Justice Timothy Mazzei of the New York State Supreme Court. For more details, you can read the full article here.

As previously covered by CrimeOnline, Heuermann was apprehended in Manhattan in July 2023, facing accusations related to the murders of three women: Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Lynn Costello, 27, which occurred in 2009 and 2010.

Further charges were brought against Heuermann in June 2024, implicating him in the deaths of Costilla and Jessica Taylor. Later, in December 2024, he was formally charged with the murder of Valerie Mack.

Heuermann’s defense is challenging the validity of the Castillo case, arguing that the evidence, which hinges on a lone hair strand found on her clothing, lacks the necessary legal weight to substantiate the charges or any lesser offenses.

Heueremann’s defense team contended that the evidence is not “legally sufficient to establish the offense charged or any lesser included offense.”

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney told the court he planned to oppose the motion.

Mazzei gave the prosecution until March 3 to respond. The defense will have until March 17, Patch reports.

“There are some real significant issues that they’re bringing to the court’s attention,” defense attorney Michael Brown said, following the hearing.

Mazzei expects that the “trial will begin after Labor Day…come hell or high water.”
