A U.S. Army National Guardsman who had just returned from drill duty fatally shot a man after discovering him in bed with his ex-girlfriend, who is also the mother of his child.

Natravien Landry, 27, pleaded guilty last week to second-degree murder in the killing of U.S. Army Sgt. Andre S. Stewart Jr. at Fort Gordon Army base, formerly known as Fort Eisenhower, in Augusta, Georgia. Court records show Landry now faces a potential life sentence and must serve at least 10 years in prison.

The shooting unfolded at about 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 14, 2024, at an apartment complex on the base. According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, Landry had reported for drill duty earlier that morning and went to the woman’s home during a break.

A witness told federal investigators that Landry, still wearing his uniform, asked who owned the black truck parked outside the apartment. When the front door opened, he forced his way inside, authorities said.

Investigators said Landry then went to the bedroom and confronted Stewart, who was in a relationship with the woman at the time. The woman told authorities the two were asleep when she heard the disturbance. According to the affidavit, Landry struck Stewart four times with a gun before shooting him. Stewart then staggered out of the bedroom and collapsed on the stairs.

Paramedics took Stewart to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Landry fled but was later taken into custody following a traffic stop. Authorities said he had thrown the gun from the vehicle, and his military uniform was found inside the car.

Landry admitted to shooting Stewart in a Mirandized interview. The woman at the center of the ordeal told investigators that Landry was jealous of Stewart.

Rasheika Jones, Stewart’s sister, said in a GoFundMe account description her brother was “viciously murdered.” He left behind a 5-year-old son who was in the apartment at the time of the shooting.

“Andre was a young man starting to build his life,” she wrote.

A sentencing date for Landry has yet to be set.
