An Ohio man is facing a federal charge after authorities say he made violent threats against President Donald Trump and vowed to go to a member of Congress’ home, set it on fire, and kill the lawmaker and his relatives while they slept.
Alex Justin Miller, 26, was taken into custody and charged with one count of transmitting a threat to injure across state lines, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.
Court records filed in the Middle District of Florida say the FBI opened an investigation after the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office alerted federal agents on Aug. 18 to a threatening email allegedly sent by Miller to a congressman referred to in the complaint as “Victim 1.”
Cincinnati Fox affiliate WXIX reported that the lawmaker named in the case is Republican Rep. Randy Fine of Florida.
Investigators said the email was sent at 9:02 a.m. from an account later connected to Miller. Its subject line included an explicit threat about shooting the congressman, followed by a smiley face, according to the complaint.
In the body of the message, authorities allege, the sender used profanity and threatened to travel to the congressman’s residence, burn it down, and murder him and his family. The email also accused the recipients of being “Nazis” and included graphic language about beheading the lawmaker and displaying his body publicly, prosecutors said.
The email ended with an all-caps statement calling for the deaths of both the congressman and President Trump, according to federal investigators.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office submitted emergency disclosure requests to Google and Charter Communications for information associated with the Gmail account and the internet connection used to access it.
Google records showed that the account was associated with a Google Voice telephone number and Google Pay records listing the subscriber as Alex Miller, according to the complaint. Investigators also conducted an open-source search of the telephone number and linked it to Miller.
Google login records showed the Gmail account had been accessed from an IP address that Charter Communications associated with a service address on Arden Forest Lane in Columbus, the complaint said.
Prosecutors said the Ohio Department of Motor Vehicle records listed the same address as Miller’s current driver’s license address.
Investigators also found Cash App and Venmo accounts associated with the Gmail address that used the name Alex Miller.
A separate emergency disclosure request for the Google Voice number produced a forwarding number that was similarly tied to the Columbus address, according to the complaint.
If convicted, Miller faces up to five years in federal prison. It was not immediately clear when he was scheduled to appear in court.
