What reportedly began as an ordinary night of board games in an Arizona apartment courtyard ended in a deadly domestic violence case, with police alleging a man later returned to his unit and killed his girlfriend using a “metallic cane shaft.”
Kyle Collins, 37, is accused of striking Cierra Tellez repeatedly “all over the victim’s body,” causing extensive bruising and deep cuts, including a wound on her forehead where “the skull appeared to be visible,” according to an arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime.
Tellez, 36, a Mesa mother of two, was discovered dead and unclothed on July 21 inside the apartment she shared with Collins, police said. Her body was found wedged between the side of a bed frame and a bedroom wall.
Collins was the person who called 911, investigators said, allegedly telling dispatchers that he had returned home from work and found Tellez dead inside the apartment.
According to the affidavit, neighbors told officers they had spent the previous night in the complex courtyard playing board games with Collins and Tellez and did not notice anything alarming. “The witnesses [neighbors] indicated the night prior they were playing board games with Kyle and [Tellez] in the courtyard in the complex but nothing suspicious was observed,” the document states. “An additional neighbor informed officers they observed them all playing board games the night prior as well. None of the witnesses observed any visible injuries or bruises on [Tellez] that they could recall during the game playing.”
One neighbor later told AZ Family that the evening had seemed completely normal. “We were outside playing Monopoly. Everything was fine, nothing was off,” the neighbor said.
Collins was taken into custody and booked on charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping. Authorities said that during the booking process, he was allegedly heard making remarks to jail staff.
“When asked ‘do you have any plans on hurting yourself or others today’ he stated ‘yeah, both,’ along with an utterance about ‘I already hurt someone so nah, I’m just playin,'” the affidavit recounts.
During his first court appearance last week, prosecutors reportedly said Collins had a history of domestic violence.
“This was a very brutal and horrific murder,” a prosecutor said, according to AZ Family. “We believe that Mr. Collins is a very dangerous individual.”
