ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – A man armed with knives forced the complete closure of two roads in Englewood which also led to the implementation of a secure perimeter at several neighboring schools late Wednesday morning, according to police.

Hampden Ave. and S. Clarkson St. in Englewood were shut down in all directions just before noon Wednesday as Englewood police responded to a scene in the area after getting reports of a man in the middle of traffic.

Once there, they found a man armed with two knives who was threatening officers and refusing to comply, police said. Officers trained in crisis negotiations spoke with the man and after approximately 30 minutes, he was taken into custody safely.

Due to this incident, three schools nearby were put on a secure perimeter as a precaution: Englewood High School, Englewood Middle School and the Leadership Academy.

“Secure perimeter” refers to a school’s response regarding a safety concern that is not an immediate threat to the campus, in which doors are locked to the school buildings but students and staff conduct business as usual.

All lanes reopened by 12:35 p.m., police said.
