A Florida man is accused of killing his roommate with a machete in a violent attack, with police saying the mortally wounded victim used his final words to point officers toward the alleged assailant.
Edy Rivas Rizo, 27, is being held at the Broward County Jail after he was charged Sunday with premeditated murder. According to an arrest report reviewed by Law&Crime, Hallandale Beach police were called to a mobile home park in Hallandale Beach, Florida, around 1:15 p.m. for reports of a stabbing. Officers arrived to find the unidentified victim lying on the ground, “bleeding profusely” from a chest wound near his right armpit.
The victim was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead roughly 30 minutes later.
Investigators said Rivas Rizo initially denied chasing the victim. But after police confronted him with surveillance video, he allegedly revised his account, admitting he had pursued the man while claiming he intended to hit him with the broad side of the machete rather than the sharpened edge.
Rivas Rizo remains jailed at the Broward County Jail without bond. Court records did not list a future hearing date.
