In a chilling case that has shocked Arizona, a man who brutally murdered his girlfriend and her dog has been sentenced to 16 years behind bars. Taton Dorfman, 30, received his sentence after being convicted of the second-degree murder of Hannah Rogers, also 30. This disturbing incident unfolded on July 28, 2024, leaving a community reeling.
According to reports from local news outlets, including NBC affiliate KVOA, Dorfman committed the heinous act in Rogers’ home. Authorities detailed how he shot Rogers in the head, ending her life, before also killing her dog. This act of violence was compounded by Dorfman’s subsequent phone call to his ex-girlfriend, where he shockingly confessed to the crime.
On a FaceTime call, Dorfman allegedly exclaimed, “I killed her! I did it!” as he lay next to Rogers’ lifeless body, blood conspicuously visible around her head. This confession led to a swift response from local law enforcement, who were alerted to perform a welfare check on Rogers the following day.
The Marana Police Department responded to the scene on the 5400 block of West Mosquito Drive at approximately 10:30 p.m. Officers attempted to engage with Dorfman, who had barricaded himself inside the residence for several tense hours. The situation highlighted the dangers faced by responding officers and the shocking nature of the crime.
“I killed her! I did it!” he reportedly exclaimed to his ex while on FaceTime, displaying himself lying next to Rogers’ body, with blood visible around her head.
According to Tucson-based ABC affiliate KGUN, the ex took screenshots and reported the incident to police.
The Marana Police Department was asked to do a welfare check on Rogers, the agency said in a press release the next day. Officers arrived at the crime scene on the 5400 block of West Mosquito Drive at about 10:30 p.m. and tried to speak with Dorfman, but he “barricaded himself in the residence for several hours.”
Roughly five hours after officers showed up, Dorfman was taken into custody. He reportedly had blood on his face and hands but no injuries when he was arrested.
Rogers and her dog were found dead inside the home. Officers are said to have also discovered a large amount of drug paraphernalia and alcohol inside.
Dorfman was originally charged with first-degree murder. The charge was later changed to second-degree murder, and the judge said because of the circumstances of the case, the maximum sentence he was able to give was 16 years, local CBS affiliate KOLD reported.
Dorfman was also reportedly sentenced for time served on the cruelty to animals charge.
Marana is about 20 miles northwest of Tucson.
