An Oregon man has been sentenced to more than 30 years in prison for fatally stabbing his 9-year-old son with a spear last fall.
Levi Higgins-Green, 38, pleaded guilty in August to multiple charges, including second-degree murder, strangulation constituting domestic violence, two counts of criminal mischief and three counts of assault, according to a press release from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office.
This week, 15th Judicial District Judge Martin Stone ordered Higgins-Green to serve a combined minimum sentence of 30 years and eight months in prison. Under Oregon law, he will be eligible for parole after completing that minimum term.
The killing took place in September 2025 at a home near Cape Arago Highway in Charleston, a sparsely populated, unincorporated coastal community in Coos County.
When deputies arrived, they were told the boy’s sister had “accidentally stabbed him during play with a spear,” the sheriff’s office said.
Investigators later determined that the child had been stabbed by his father.
Several law enforcement agencies responded, while paramedics attempted to save the boy’s life. He was taken to Bay Area Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
After a weeklong investigation, authorities executed a search warrant at the home in October 2025, the sheriff’s office announced at the time. Detectives found evidence indicating that Higgins-Green was responsible for his son’s death. Authorities have not disclosed a motive.
Higgins-Green was first charged only with second-degree murder. Prosecutors later added several other charges.
“Also uncovered during the investigation were instances of domestic violence involving the other adults and children who lived in the home which occurred over years,” the sheriff’s office said in its latest release. The agency added that the surviving family specifically requested that their names be withheld.
